Each year the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) hosts hundreds of music festivals throughout the state, where both individual musicians and different types of performing ensembles can go to perform in front of judges to receive scores and feedback. NYSSMA Majors is the event at which groups are adjudicated and rated on three pieces. Groups can receive a Gold, Silver, or Bronze rating, depending on how well they perform. There is also “Gold with distinction”, which means that the group performed flawlessly. There are six levels of difficulty, with 6 being the hardest.
This year, four groups from our district attended the NYSSMA Majors festival at RFA on May 20. Both the 6th Grade Band, under the direction of Margie Hawthorne, and 8th Grade Band, under the direction of Nick Anderalli, received Silver awards, performing at a level 2 and a level 3. Silver is awarded to groups that demonstrate an excellent level of technical and artistic skill in 8 evaluative categories. The High School Concert Choir, under the direction of Heather O’Connell, and Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dave Hawthorne, performed a level 4 and a level 6, with both groups receiving Gold Awards. Gold is awarded to groups that have demonstrated an outstanding level of technical and artistic skill in 8 evaluative categories, for all three pieces. We are incredibly proud of our students and their hard work and dedication to the music program, and congratulate them on a job very well done!
Kyle Pedersen looks at a computer and sees a whole host of career possibilities. The Oneida High School senior has been studying those options in the Information Technology Systems/CISCO course at Madison-Oneida BOCES.
"Computers have always been around, whether it was the abacus or a calculator or something we have today. There are so many jobs that use a computer," he said. "Computers are different, they're challenging, and I like that."
IT Systems/CISCO is a two-year program that prepares students for careers in the information technology field. Students learn the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully install, maintain and repair computer networks and complete hardware/software upgrades in a state-of-the-art classroom lab. They also learn important job skills such as project management, complex problem solving, teamwork, interpersonal communication and customer service skills.
Kyle hopes to work in network security and design. He's already taken several steps toward that goal. As a junior, he sat alongside a room of IT professionals and completed a "certified ethical hacker" course at the Griffiss Institute and already plans to earn additional CISCO certifications after graduation. He also works as a student technician in his high school's IT department, completing inventory and working on computer maintenance issues.
Kyle plans to attend Clarkson University in the fall to major in computer science. He is the son of Valerie and Donald Pedersen of Sylvan Beach.

On Friday, May 17th, more than 480 riders participated in the Central New York Ride for Missing Children. The event is as emotionally draining as it is physical, but so rewarding. It is about raising awareness of what we can do to help stop child predators and bring missing kids back to somewhere safe. It raises needed funds to help distribute posters of missing children and support the mission of NCMEC-NY/MV. Each Rider wears a pin of a missing child that they are riding for. It becomes very personal.
As a school district we are proud to have 16 of the participants in this year's ride tied to Oneida CSD including Teachers, Administrators, Spouses, and Children of employees. We are very proud of the folks who are employed at OCSD and our community!
It is a tradition at OHS to honor every student who finishes the year with an 85 average or above. Almost 50% of the entire senior class has an average of 85 and above. There are 41 students whose final averages are in the 90's. This is a testament to the academic achievement of this year's graduating class.
The averages of the top ten students for 2013 are separated by only fractions of a point. These students were also honored recently.

On Wednesday April 3rd, the candlelight induction ceremony for current juniors into the National Honor Society was held in the OHS Auditorium. The inductees were: Cameron Buell, David Carroll, Rachel Coons, Jenna Didio, Mark Gillmeister, Jackie Johnson, Tayloe Karst, Daniel Keck, Krista Kennedy, Tyler Kuhn, Rachel Labrecque, Rachele Markle, Serena Masner, Mitchell Mccormick, Michael McCormick, Victoria Mondi, Zachary Murray, Steven Patricia, Hannah Scanlon, Christopher Spencer, Kayla Stannard, and Christian Zombek.
Each student was asked to pick a teacher that has made a difference in their lives to introduce them. Technology students have spent the last two years designing and building their own electric vehicle for the CNY electrathon competition. This competition takes place every spring at Watking Glen Raceway.
Electrathon is a type of Electric Marathon in which the winner is determined by how far you go in a certain time with a given amount of battery power. Electrathon class competitions use specific design rules to ensure safe and fair competition. Electrathon events are held around the country and are an exciting new environmentally progressive sport.
The goal of Electrathon is to provide a learning experience that will build public awareness of the capabilities and potential of efficient electric vehicles. Developed around specific rules designed to keep cost down and competition high, these unique vehicles offer an opportunity and challenge to experiment, learn, and compete.
Students raced their vehicle against 17 other school teams from all over New York State. The team was required to pass a safety inspection prior to racing, and also required to change drivers halfway through the race.

Even if they weren’t a driver, each student played an integral role in building and troubleshooting the vehicle up to and even during the race. The product development life-cycle and design process are used to guide and help the students reach a solution to the selected problem. This course allows students to apply all of the skills and knowledge learned in previous Project Lead The Way courses. The use of 3D design software helps students design solutions to their chosen problem. This course also engages students in time-management and teamwork skills, a valuable skill set for today's students.
This year the EDD class designed and developed a prototype adirondack chair, while the carpentry class, built additional chairs off the prototype. One of the chairs will be raffled off on June 5th. Tickets are $5 each or $10 for 3. Proceeds go to materials costs for past and future projects. The adirondack chair is valued at $700.00, but sells for $450 from Mr. Straczuk at the high school.
The Oneida City School District uses SchoolTool as its Student Data Management System. A component of this system is a secure, web-based portal for accessing student’s grades, attendance and other information. The District will be providing parents and guardians of students in grades 6-12 access to information in SchoolTool through the Parent Portal as a way of encouraging participation in a child’s education and improving communication between students, parents/guardians, and District Staff.
